John 12:1-8 (NLT)

Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.

4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.

7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

BACKGROUND
Mary’s Personality
She was not the kind of woman who sought to fit into anybody else’s idea/definition of who/what she needed to do or be
At Jesus’ feet learning, rather than helping with the meal prep
Broke into “men’s convo” around the table to anoint Jesus’ feet
Wouldn’t stay at home & mourn when she found out Jesus was there
Mary’s Pursuit
She was always at the feet of Jesus (Lk10:39; Jn11:32; Jn12:3)
Jesus always defended her savage loyalty & devotion (Lk10:42b; Jn12:7)
Mary’s actions always moved Him (Lk10:42b; Jn11:33; 12:7)
According to Jn12:1, Mary’s anointing happened 6-8 days before Passover feast about a week before Jesus’ crucifixion
Jesus never sexualized her; proved Himself to be a safe man.
Jesus did not treat her condescendingly, patronize or pander to her. He engaged her as an equal & received her with respect. He showed He valued her & her personhood.
Jesus is unconcerned with the structures, strictures, optics, aesthetics. He’s here to free us from those, not ask us to stay restricted in them.
Jesus accepted her as a valuable person
Jesus acknowledged her devotion (Mk14:9)
